The Comprehension Toolkit
The Comprehension Toolkit is a teaching system utilized with some third, fourth and fifth grade students at Kerkstra in need of reading support, specifically in the area of comprehension.

The Comprehension Toolkit was developed by Stephanie Harvey and Anne Goudvis. This program has two components: a primary Toolkit, and an intermediate Toolkit, for our purposes of instruction at Kerkstra. The program focus is to teach thinking strategies for improved comprehension.

Program Approach |
This program's focus is to teach reading comprehension strategies using a variety of written materials. These include trade books & articles. The six key comprehension strategies taught are: monitor comprehension, activate and connect, ask questions, infer and visualize, determine importance, and summarize and synthesize. These strategies are presented via a variety of subjects, including content area topics.
