The book in a bag or read at home program associated with Title I Reading support is an area of pride! This is when your child has the opportunity to demonstrate what he is learning in school, using a trade book to read for pleasure.
For our first and second graders, the program is referred to as the "Book in a Bag Program". Early in the school year, your child will bring home a bag with a book at his instructional reading level. With your help, he will be able to read the book with about 90% accuracy, as he is selecting books that are at his instructional level. In addition, your child will bring home a coupon for you both to complete. I encourage you to do this with your child, to foster the bond of reading for pleasure between the two of you! By devoting 10-20 minutes per evening to your child's reading, you will be helping him in all aspects of educational growth. In addition, when your child brings back a completed coupon to school, he will receive a small prize in recognition of his reading efforts on Friday.
For third, fourth, and fifth graders, the Read at Home Program involves a book read at your child's instructional reading level. Listen to your child read aloud, or take turns reading the book for enjoyment. When you are done with the book, help your child complete the coupon, and, upon returning it to me, he will receive a prize on Friday.
